Imported scrap steel is "yoke" at the border gate

January 2013, Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) has sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Natural Resources - Environmental forward the objections in yoke of scrap steel at the importing border gate.

Reason, the Customs at the border requires "professional evaluation board" to verify the shipment in accordance with an inter-ministerial circular takes effect from January 01, 2013.

 

According to the VSA, this provision is not feasible because scrap steel is the main raw material for steel production in the U.S., each year must import millions tons of steel to serve domestic demand. Detention time, demurrage costly, the cost will be included in the price and consumers bear the full, not to mention very difficult to compete with imported steel. Moreover, the Ministry of Natural Resources - Environmental has not specified the unit to assessment, so the Customs at the border gates cannot for the clearance of scrap steel importing business.
